What is Reformer Pilates and where can you try it in Manila?

What is Reformer Pilates and where can you try it in Manila?

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference, and in 30 sessions you will have an entirely new body.”

This is the famous quote of Joseph Pilates, a late German physical trainer who invented the Pilates method as physical exercise. He also introduced several machines and apparatus to maximize the workout, including the reformer machine.

Some may or may not agree with Pilates’s quote regarding his original workout method, but as with any other physical exercise, consistency plays an important role if you wish to transform your body for the better, and that's exactly the premise of Pilates: you need at least 10 sessions to feel the difference in your physique.

But, first things first: What is Reformer Pilates and how does it differ from Mat Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a reformer machine specifically designed to further elevate one’s training for strength and flexibility through the bed-like frame equipment’s resistance capabilities using springs. It also has various parts such as ropes and pulleys that allow the body to move in different ways.

On the other hand, Mat Pilates can be performed without equipment, solely relying on bodyweight and resistance exercises on the mat.

When done consistently, Mat Pilates can be as effective as Reformer Pilates, but if you want to challenge yourself a little more, opt for the latter.

Contrary to cardio workouts that focus on speed and repetitions, Pilates is based on the principle of control, precision, and breathing. It’s not about how many reps you can do in a minute. Instead, it’s about pulling off the right form, no matter how slow you move.

Among the many physical benefits of Reformer Pilates is the ability to target specific muscle groups, including the core, abdominal muscles, lower back, and glutes.

Aside from overall body strength and flexibility, Reformer Pilates is also a preferred exercise to improve posture and balance.

In the Philippines, ONELIFE is one of the pioneers of Reformer Pilates. They have branches in San Juan, Makati, Ortigas, and a newly opened studio in BGC. The Filipino-owned Pilates boutique, founded by Tanya Maria Aguila, offers an innovative blend of clinical Pilates and physical therapy tailored to one’s specific health needs.

As a Pilates beginner, this writer recently signed up for a starter package at ONELIFE. This includes one fitness assessment session, three personal training sessions, and one physio-led stretch session, priced at P7,000.

In the fitness assessment session, you will be assessed thoroughly and set goals based on your starting point. From where you currently are on your fitness journey, ONELIFE’s physiotherapist will then create a personalized training program tailored to your needs and goals.

After your fitness assessment, you may proceed with your personal training sessions, where you will be guided by a physiotherapist, especially if you are a beginner.

Lastly, the physio-led stretch session is like a pampering reward after an intense Pilates session. It relieves stiffness and discomfort through stretching and the use of a theragun.

With two sessions in, this writer’s verdict on Reformer Pilates is generally positive. Aside from its physical benefits, it’s also a practice that benefits one’s overall mental well-being through controlled breathing and low-impact movements. Plus, any physical activity releases happy endorphins, which are our body’s natural mood boosters!
