An extra layer of rainy-day protection
The rainy season may bring many inconveniences to our kids but we always make sure they are protected -- umbrellas and jackets to keep them dry, staying in when the rain is too strong, or making sure they get home safe despite the floods. Aside from these challenges, the rainy season can also bring danger in the form of sickness, and one of the most worrisome diseases of this season is dengue.
Cases of dengue in the Philippines have been continuously increasing since April despite reminders from the Department of Health on how to prevent mosquitoes from multiplying and spreading the disease. With increased frequency of rains, there are more insect breeding grounds and more mosquitoes transmitting the disease through their bites, putting our kids in danger.
Prevention is protection
Whether kids are indoors or outdoors, there may be mosquitoes that come into their spaces without them knowing. It’s up to us to protect them. Be vigilant in keeping your homes and surroundings free from stagnant water:
-Check your home for areas where water may stagnate after the rains, like blocked gutters or floors without drains, and clear out water consistently.
-Turn over or keep covered empty pots, vases, pails, basins, and garbage cans.
-Keep your pet’s water dish fresh.
-Fix leaks that may contribute to water build up in certain areas.
Some areas in the community or your surroundings may contribute to the spread of mosquitoes like creeks or construction sites. Maintaining cleanliness and fumigating periodically can be helpful in eradicating mosquitoes, but when these parts of the community are beyond our control we must take our own measures of protection.
If possible, install screens to doors and windows to keep out mosquitoes and other pests. Use mosquito nets to keep your child’s sleep unbothered and out of reach of insects. Have them wear clothing that covers most of their body if the weather permits. Use kid-friendly insect repellent for that extra layer of protection against bites.
Because the health and well-being of our kids is of utmost importance, we can never be too careful when it comes to dengue season. We want them to enjoy their time playing or learning despite what the weather may bring. Help kids stay away from diseases spread by mosquito bites and other insects. Use OFF! Baby Insect Repellent Lotion especially when going outdoors. Take extra protection for extra prevention, and don’t forget your umbrella these rainy days.
