UNICEF calls for intensified vaccination efforts to combat polio on World Polio Day

Today, October 24, marks World Polio Day.
According to the World Health Organization's Polio Risk Assessment for 2022-2023, the Philippines remains at risk for polio outbreaks, with 24 out of 81 provinces considered high-risk.
In observance of World Polio Day, UNICEF Philippines is issuing a crucial call to action, urging the government and immunization partners to intensify their efforts to combat polio, with a particular focus on vulnerable communities with limited access to essential health services.
The Department of Health launched an intensified immunization campaign named "Chikiting Ligtas" in May. However, it achieved only 81 percent of the targeted polio vaccination rate, falling short of the 95 percent goal.
The Philippines has encountered challenges in reaching the desired 95 percent routine coverage for children, mainly due to governance issues, low demand, and persistent missed opportunities, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNICEF Philippines Deputy Representative Behzad Noubary emphasizes the need for sustained progress against polio and the necessity for additional efforts to enhance immunization coverage.
"We can and must do more to meet our vaccination targets of 95 percent coverage through strengthening routine immunization and catch-up activities," he underlines, emphasizing that increased vaccination coverage is an investment in a more robust and resilient healthcare system.
Globally, UNICEF plays a pivotal role in the fight against polio, vaccinating over 400 million children annually. In the Philippines, UNICEF collaborates with the government at various levels, from the national to the barangay level, to strengthen healthcare systems.
In addition to training healthcare workers, UNICEF supplies cold chain equipment and strengthens the immunization supply chain.
At the inaugural National Immunization Summit 2023, jointly hosted by the Department of Health, UNICEF Philippines, and the World Health Organization Philippines, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa reaffirmed the commitment to "close the immunization gap" by uniting all sectors of society.
The Department of Health has unveiled an ambitious two-year immunization acceleration plan, with the goal of achieving a 90 percent fully immunized child status by 2025.
UNICEF's unwavering efforts in vaccination and immunization are significant steps toward a healthier, polio-free future for the Philippines, underscoring the importance of robust health systems and partnerships.
