Is it dangerous to exercise in intense heat?

While exercising your body contributes to good health, doing so during periods of intense heat may be dangerous.

This is the warning issued by the Department of Health (DOH) as the dry season continues in the Philippines.

According to Jonathan Andal's report on "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, one should consider the heat index before exercising. The heat index is the heat that a person feels and depends on the temperature of the air and relative humidity.

If it reaches 42°C or more, this is considered the danger zone, and it's possible to have a heat stroke.

Cities that have reached 43°C just last April 21, 2023 include Dagupan City, Davao City, and Legazpi City.

The PAGASA heat index forecast for April 24, 2023 includes the following areas possibly reaching dangerous temperatures: Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija, Catarman in Northern Samar, and San Jose all at 42°C, Davao and Tacloban City at  44°C, General Santos City at 47°C and Catbalogan in Samar at 49°C.

General Santos City may reach 53°C this Thursday.

"Makakadagdag po sa panganib sa kalusugan. Halimbawa, matindi iyong init tapos [magjo-jogging ka pa], e, matindi rin e. Talagang mag-ingat po," DOH Undersecretary Dr. Eric Tayag said on DZBB.

Tess Nocyao, a strength coach and a national athlete for obstacle course racing said, also gave some advice on exercising safely.

"For me, ah, iwasan ang 10 [a.m.] - 3 p.m. kasi sobrang tirik na 'yung araw na 'yun," she said.

"So, pag nahilo, dapat stop agad at magpahinga, pumunta sa may shaded area at uminom ng tubig," she added.

Ingat, mga Kapuso!
