PCOS is a lifelong diagnosis — here's how you can control its symptoms
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is a condition among women caused by hyperinsulinemia, or having more insulin in the blood than usual.
Some PCOS symptoms include weight gain, acne breakouts, irregular periods, and hair growth in unwanted body areas.
It sounds regular enough but when you're dealing with never-ending acne breakouts or irregular periods, it can be frustrating.
At Nala Woman's "Let's Talk Women" conference last Friday, Dr. Angelynn Sianghao-Lapada said PCOS is a lifelong disease. While it's incurable, PCOS symptoms and triggers are manageable.
Birth control pills, for one, are helpful when dealing with PCOS.
"The birth control pills, metformin, or something to control your lipids or your cholesterol is something you can take as a preventive measure," Dr. Lapada told GMA News Online.
"PCOS is more of [an] acquired disease in such a way that if you forego exercise or physical activity, that's the time that you can develop insulin resistance," she explained.
Dr. Lapada adds you can't just to pinpoint PCOS to one cause because "it's multifactorial. "
"It's more of a lot of factors, and then your body reacts to it," she added.
The mainstay treatment for women with PCOS is a lifestyle change.
According to the doctor, a balanced diet and consistent physical activity are also necessary so that PCOS symptoms, like weight gain and acne breakouts, won't flare up.
Aside from lifestyle change, the doctor advised women to be very wary of what they do to their bodies and to "be very mindful of what you put inside your body" especially with regards to food and nourishment.
