Woman with lump on scalp undergoes surgery through GMA Kapuso Foundation
A woman who has a large lump on her scalp has undergone surgery with the help of the GMA Kapuso Foundation.
According to “24 Oras” reports on Monday and Wednesday, 19-year-old Shane De Lumen first noticed the lump in March. She did not mind the lump until it grew larger and started emitting an odor.
“Naisipan ko pong magpakulay ng buhok and nag-bleach and parang nagalaw po yung buhok ko ng suklay na patusok ta’s parang maraming beses po siyang nagalaw-galaw,” she said.
(I thought that I could dye my hair, then my scalp was pierced by a comb several times hitting the lump.)
“Siguro po na-irritate tapos nakikita ko po yung changes na lumalaki ganon,” she added. “Then yung buhok ko rin po, nagsasama-sama, lumalakas yung amoy niya kasi nadadamay yung buhok.”
(Maybe the lump was irritated in the process, then I noticed some changes. Then I noticed the clumping of my hair and the odor from the lump was stronger.)
Shane said she does not have enough money to undergo the necessary medical treatment. So she just used guava leaves to clean the lump. This is the time that one of her siblings asked for help from the GMA Kapuso Foundation.
She was immediately brought to dermatologist Dr. Grace Beltran who conducted an excision biopsy then identified the lump as pyogenic granuloma. Shane underwent surgery to remove the mass.
“Nasa scalp pa siya which is also a vascular region kaya ang surgery dito, medyo cautious tayo. Ang problema, according to the biopsy, meron pang mga vascular proliferation na nakita do’n sa ilalim nung scalp kaya Shane will need a second surgical procedure,” Beltran said.
(The lump is in the scalp, which is a vascular region so we have to be cautious. The problem, according to the biopsy is there is a proliferation that was seen under the scalp so Shane would need a second surgery.)
Meanwhile, Beltran said there are studies that show that chemical ingredients in hair products “can cause injury or irritation to the scalp” which can lead to Shane’s condition.
“Kapag maliit pa lang, asikasuhin na nila. ‘Wag na nila antaying lumobo,” she told viewers.
(Something should be done right away when the lump is still small. Do not wait for the lump to grow in size.)
