How to perform CPR: Here’s a step-by-step guide
Before heading to the beach, it’s important to observe safety precautions and be equipped with proper information in case of emergencies.
On the #KuyaKimAnoNa segment of “24 Oras” Wednesday, Philippine Red Cross instructor Darrel Atanascio showed how to properly administer first aid through CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Place the victim in a comfortable position and proceed with CPR if the area is safe, or call for additional help.
- Monitor the patient’s level of consciousness by talking to them or tapping them on the shoulder. If there’s no response, call an ambulance.
- Examine the patient’s airway, breathing, and pulse.
- Make sure the patient is free from restrictive clothing. Extend your arms and place the heels of your hands on top of one another and over the patient’s chest.
- Perform 30 compressions, pinch the nose, then open the patient’s mouth and give two rescue breaths. These should be done five times in two minutes.
CPR or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is also known as the “Kiss of Life.” According to Kuya Kim, it is an artificial ventilation where a person gives air to another who has a hard time breathing.
This is commonly done when someone drowns. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated number of 236,000 people worldwide died of drowning in 2019.
In the Philippines, meanwhile, around 5,200 people die due to drowning every year. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
