PCW encourages ‘Juanas’ to get screened for breast cancer
The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) has encouraged all “Juanas” to get screened for breast cancer in observation of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We encourage all Juanas to practice regular self-breast examination, seek early consultation or teleconsultation if necessary, as we emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer among women,” the PCW wrote in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
“Indeed, early detection of breast cancer can lead to better treatment results for patients,” it added.
The commission also encouraged the public to visit the health department’s website: doh.gov.ph for more information about breast cancer awareness.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most common form of the disease, accounting for nearly 12% of new cases each year worldwide.
The WHO, warning against risk factors, said that around one third of deaths from cancer are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, and alcohol use.
