2-year-old child with huge neck lump gets surgery with GMA Kapuso Foundation’s help
A two-year-old child is now free from the huge lump on his neck after undergoing surgery with the help of GMA Kapuso Foundation.
According to a “24 Oras” report, Wednesday, Jarred became one of the beneficiaries of the foundation when it went to Samar for a surgical outreach program in 2019.
The then-five-month-old baby, whose neck lump was almost as big as his own head, was diagnosed with cystic hygroma.
“Parang dalawa na po ’yung ulo niya, kasing laki ng ulo niya yung bukol,” said Jarred’s father Jovelito Gabia.
[It’s like he had two heads, the lump was as big as his head.]
Pediatric surgeon Dr. Marcus Lester Suntay said the condition usually occurred in children and was caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid.
According to the doctor, the lump may obstruct the airway because it’s on the neck. “’Pag lumaki siya, pwede siya magpigil sa paghinga,” he said.
[When it gets bigger, it might suppress his breathing.]
With the help of World Surgical Foundation Philippines and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, Jarred’s lump was finally removed.
Now, he is able to move freely and energetically without having to endure pain.
“Napakasaya namin kasi natanggal na po yung bukol niya,” Jovelito said. “Parang nabunutan na po kami ng tinik.”
[We’re happy because his lump is now gone. It’s like a thorn has been pulled out.]
