65-year-old woman regains eyesight after being blind for 3 years

A 65-year-old woman couldn’t help but cry tears of joy when she regained her eyesight after being blind for almost three years because of cataract.

On Oscar Oida’s “24 Oras” report Tuesday, Teresita Beliver said she was happy to be able to see again.

“Ang tagal ko po naghirap. Sa sobrang tuwa ko po kaya napaiyak po ako. Iyakin talaga ako eh. Napakahirap po ng hindi nakakakita,” she said.

[I suffered for a long time. I cried because of so much joy. I really cry easily. Not being able to see is really hard.]

To help Lola Teresita stop crying, Dr. Noel Jusay Lacsamana joked and gave her three things to remember.

“Bawal magkusot ng mata, bawal titingin sa pangit. Number three: ’wag gagawa ng kasalanan,” he told her.

[Don’t rub your eyes, don’t look at ugliness. Number three: Don’t sin.]

According to the report, Lola Teresita’s eyesight started getting blurry in 2018 until she went completely blind. It also affected her mental health.

“Talagang sobrang depressed ko po. Hindi na ako nakakatulog. Marami na po akong naiisip na kung anu-ano dahil nawawalan na po ako ng pag-asa,” she said.

[I became really depressed. I can’t sleep. I’ve thought of lots of things because I was losing hope.]

She finally sought the help of Lacsamana last May. On the same day, she underwent surgery.

Lola Teresita said the first thing she did after regaining her eyesight was go to Quiapo Church to thank God.

“[She was diagnosed with] cataract. You know, cataract is a very common disease. Millions of Filipinos are suffering from cataract,” said the doctor.

According to him, cataract can be treated when it’s given attention early or as soon as symptoms occur.

Symptoms of cataract include blurring of vision, cloudiness of sight, and when one experiences difficulty in reading for more than five minutes.
