Should you have your mole removed? Doctor gives advice
Almost everyone has moles in their skin and most of them are pretty much harmless pigmented spots.
Some moles on the face are even considered beauty marks, but some people choose to have them removed instead.
So, to remove or not to remove? According to an episode of "Pinoy MD," it depends.
"Some people have them removed for cosmetic purposes because they don't like how the moles look," dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said in a mix of English and Filipino.
There are moles, however, that need to be removed for medical reasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is rare but some moles can become cancerous.
How do we know if we should be concerned about a mole? Marquez said to watch out for any changes in size, shape, color, or border.
A mole which suddenly grows bigger, has uneven coloring, has an asymmetrical shape, or has one side bumpy may merit a trip to the dermatologist.
It is best to get it checked and if needed, biopsied to determine whether it is premalignant or malignant.
Depending on the results, the mole can be surgically removed, undergo laser treatment, or other procedures as suggested by your doctor.
"It depends on the location, how big it is, or if you have other symptoms. The doctor will say what is best for you," Marquez said.
