Clay mask for skin care? Here’s what you need to know
For some people, clay masks are a necessity to achieve a brighter glow. But what really is it made of?
According to an episode of “iJuander,” these products are made from bentonite clay which is formed from volcanic ash.
“When you put it on your skin, it absorbs the oil and bacteria inside the pores, so that’s why afterwards, you really feel the cleansing effect,” said dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez.
Dr. Ellsworth Tan and his wife has formulated Eloué, a local brand of clay soap, which he says has exfoliating, anti-aging, and germicidal capabilities.
According to the doctor, he has experienced its wonders for himself when the soap made his skin brighter.
Being careful in using these products is important, though, and should be backed by certification and experts’ advice.
“Minimina sila so hindi natin alam kung ano pang other minerals o impurities na meron doon sa clay na ’yon,” said assistant professor Marcial Buladaco II of University of the Philippines Agricultural Science Institute.
“’Yung gagamitin nating volcanic clay especially if ia-apply natin sa skin is yung certified and registered products,” he added.
Doctor Jean advised those interested to use clay to test it first before going all-out.
“You have to try it first probably on a small area of your skin and see what will happen. Observe for 24 hours. If you’re hesitant, don’t just try it. Go and ask your dermatologist,” she said. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
