Here's how to get your pet dogs to calm down on New Year's Eve
For many pet dog owners out there, it's already a familiar scene when your furry animals bury themselves under the bed or shake uncontrollably amid the New Year fireworks celebration.
In Oscar Oida's report on '24 Oras," Kapuso veterinarian Dr. Nielsen Donato said that dogs get stressed during these times because their hearing ability is more than ten times better than humans.
"Unang-una 'yung shape ng ears nila, they're like radars, 'yung mga dogs na erect 'yung tenga," Donato said.
"Minsan magtataka kayo kung nasa bahay lang kayo, parating 'yung mga kasama n'yo na nakasasakyan lang, bakit alam nila ilang kilometro palang pauwi 'yung sasakyan parang alam nila na parating 'yung sasakyan. Ganoon sila ka-sensitive," he added.
Because of this hearing ability, multiple fireworks explosions may cause them so much stress.
"Talagang nanginginig sila, nagtatago sila sa ilalim ng kama. Ilan nag-droo-drool, naglalaway. Meron ibang dogs may karamdaman sa puso, pwede silang atakihin," Donato said.
To avoid these situations and help your dog calm down this coming New Year's Eve, Donato shared a few tips for fur parents:
1. Put them inside your room and play loud music
According to Donato, simply put your dog inside your room, close the windows and play music to act as a diffuser to the outside loud explosions from fireworks and firecrackers.
"Magpatugtog tayo ng malakas. Anyway sanay na ang aso sa atin," Donato said. "Minsan mapa-karaoke tayo o nag-sa-sounds tayo sa umaga, sanay na sanay 'yung mga dogs na ito."
2. Put a calming band around them
To put a calming band around your fur baby, use a non-sticky bandage usually used when you strain your wrists or ankles. This, Donato said, can be found in drugstores.
If your dog is big, use a bandage that is four inches wide. If your dog is small, use a bandage that is only two inches wide.
Finally, use the length of the bandage and wrap it around your dog's chest, all the way to their belly until you can knot it on the end of their back.
3. Love and embrace them
If these things don't work, Donato said that you can just simply give them an embrace and show your love.
"Easiest thing to do 'pag nagputukan, just embrace your dog," the veterinarian said. "Just talk to your dog, makakalmado siya."
