'UY, TUMATABA KA'

Celebrities speak up against body shaming

Celebrities speak up against body shaming

The unsolicited "uy, tumaba ka" comment is a common greeting among Filipinos whenever families gather during special events, like Christmas.

While the intentions behind it may be well-meaning, more and more people are speaking up, to end the body shaming practice.

Celebrities including Jennylyn Mercado and Janella Salvador recently spoke up against body shaming culture among Filipinos, which becomes even more evident around Christmastime.

On Twitter Sunday, Jennylyn commented on the matter, saying "can we discontinue this toxic Filipino trait na tuwing nagkikita ang hilig mag komento tungkol sa physical looks ng iba tulad ng 'uy tumaba ka,'" she wrote.

The Kapuso actress stressed how "it’s not okay" and how it might especially affect those who have eating disorders.

"First of all it’s rude, second it may trigger some people na may ED [eating disorder]. Maling mali," she wrote.

Meanwhile, Janella Salvador went viral after tweeting her opinion, saying "Filipinos are the worst body shamers."

"Let me enjoy my Christmas pudding in peace. Happy holidays to you too!" she added with laughing-crying emoji.

Her tweet came at the heels of her most recent Instagram post, where a number of netizens have left unsolicited body shaming comments.

Even former beauty queen, Winwyn Marquez, has not been spared from body shamers.

In April, Winwyn shut down a netizen who left an unwanted comment on her recent post on Instagram.

"Tumaba ka, ang lalaki ng mga muscles. Maganda ung katawan mo dati ung nanalo ka as queen," the comment in Winwyn's photo wearing muscle tee and sports bra read.

"Well, I like my muscles and if mataba 'yan for you search mo words na fit and healthy sa Google," the beauty queen replied.
