What is ‘maskne’ and what worsens it?

Now that the world is hit by a pandemic, people are required to wear masks more than ever to protect themselves and the people around them.

However, for some, wearing masks have caused them to develop “maskne” or pimples from covering their faces for prolonged periods of time.

According to dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez in an episode of “Pinoy MD,” “maskne” is also known as mechanical acne, which is caused by skin irritation.

“Pwede mag-umpisa ’yan sa irritation. Pag nagsuot ng mask madalas nagru-rub ’yung mask na iyon lalo kung ito’y rough, sa ating balat at pag nag-rub nagca-cause na tinatawag na inflammation.”

When we wear masks, she said, moisture, oil, sweat, and even dust get trapped, which can cause inflammation especially if it’s in a humid environment.

To avoid getting “maskne,” Marquez shared some factors that can worsen face pimples.

1. Stress

Aside from inheriting the tendency to have pimples, hormonal changes or stress can also worsen mechanical acne.

“Hormonal changes na nangyayari lalo na panahon nitong COVID kung saan stress na stress ang mga tao,” said Marquez.

The doctor explained that when we’re stressed, we produce more oil which clogs the pores.

“So stress worsens the condition,” she said.

2. Eating sweets

When people are stressed, some have the tendency to eat a lot of sweets to uplift their spirits. However, this diet may cause more harm than good.

“Meron pag-aaral na mga matatamis na pagkain, mga sweets can cause inflammation of skin,” said Marquez.

Unhealthy eating habits paired with wearing of mask may worsen the acne, she added.

3. Wrong skin products

“Worsening kasama ng pagsuot ng mask ay pag gumagamit na skincare products na oil-based o nakaka-tagyawat,” said the doctor.

She explained that there are skincare products that can irritate or dry up the skin and produce dead skin cells that can clog pores and natural oils.
