5 types of next-level face masks and their uses

Since face masks are part of the "new normal," some are willing to invest more money in the special kind.

But remember: Masks that are designed for different uses, and it would be best to first educate yourself on how it can lower the risk of getting COVID-19.

Here are five types of next-level face masks as explained by occupational medicine expert Dr. Gerald Belandres on GMA-7's "Unang Hirit."

1. Self-priming transparent face mask

This hard, transparent material allows other people to see one's mouth. This can make communication much easier, especially for the deaf and mute.

The mask's filtration system is also located at the bottom part of the mask, which would help shield one from droplets from the front.

Nevertheless, Dr. Belandres points out that the mask might not fit everyone perfectly, so there might still be a chance for particles to enter from the sides. The breath can also fog up and create droplets inside the mask.

2. Copper face mask

According to Dr. Belandres, copper is known for killing microbes.

The mask is also lightweight, has a glossy exterior, and has a strap that helps the mask sit snugly over the face.

3. Abaca face mask

Dr. Belandres says abaca masks can provide better filtration compared to cloth masks.

An abaca mask is also light weight, organic and more water-repellent compared to those made of regular cloth.

4. Water repellent face mask

You won't have to worry about large drops of water dampening the mask. Some also have sleeves that allow you to add more layers of filters.

5. Motor face mask

These are masks that not only cover the face, but also the neck and the back of the head.

Although these are ideal for motorcycle and bike riders, Dr. Belandres would still advise them to wear a proper face mask underneath for better protection against COVID-19.
