5 tips to avoid getting pimples from wearing face masks

Wearing a face mask for a long period of time has given rise to "maskne" or pimples caused by wearing a face mask for a long duration of time.

In a report on Unang Hirit, dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said it's actually called "Mechanical Acne."

"Meaning ito ay nagkakaroon dahil sa rubbing of the mask doon sa ating skin so nagkakaroon ng irritation at nagdedevelop ito ng acne," she explained.

According to Marquez, acne usually appears on the area where you put your mask.

"Dito sa mga earlobe especially kung rubber na ginagamit kagaya dun sa mga N95 mask," she added.

Marquez said the mask will occlude a person's oil, sweat, and bacteria inside the mask which is why it's important to follow the tips she gave below, to avoid such skin problems.

1. Choose the type of mask you use

Marquez said people can opt for softer and better-fitting masks.

"Mga fibers na mask kagaya ng cotton. We can offer mga disposable masks kagaya ng surgical masks or paper masks," she said.

She noted that it's important for the mask's fit not to be too tight for it causes irritation on the skin.

"Mag-cause ng lalong rubbing kasi, ang acne starts with inflammation and irritation and then you develop acne later. That's why it's important na hindi rin tamang tama lang 'yung fit nito sa ating face," she said.

Marquez suggested for people to choose masks made with softer fabric to cause less irritation.

2. Do not recycle the mask unless reusable and rewashable

Marquez reminded users that it's important not to recycle the mask unless it has been washed.

Disposable masks should be disposed of, and reusable masks should be washed on a daily basis.

3. Use fragrance-free soap/facial wash to clean mask

When washing your mask, Marquez suggested using facial wash or fragrance-free soap.

According to Marquez, fragrance detergent can sometimes cause allergic reactions to the face, which causes acne or worse the perfume's harsh smell can also cause allergic reaction to those who have asthma.

4. Regardless of wear time, change your mask when it's dirty

Once you know your mask has become dirty you should change it immediately. "Otherwise yung bacteria dun sa mask mag-aattract pa yun ng further bacteria from the environment so we wanna remove it," she said.

"Kapag 'eto ay nakulog na or andun na yung moist, andun na 'yung pawis, it can clog the pores then kapag inubuhan mo na puwedeng may mga bacteria na because acne is also bacteria. Nago-grow siya in a humid environment," she added.

Marqeuz said it's important to bring an extra mask with you so you can change it once it starts to get worn out.

She reminded users not to recycle or reuse a face mask the next day when it has not been washed.

5. Safety is more important

Lastly, Marquez reminded users that wearing masks for protection from COVID-19 is still more important than to avoiding acne.

"Kung 'yun lang po muna talaga mask mo then you should really wear it. Importante yun," she said. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
