Unang Hirit clarifies expert’s claim that lambanog is an alternative for rubbing alcohol

Lambanog has yet to be proven as an effective alternative to isopropyl alcohol.

Unang Hirit made the clarification in a report on Tuesday, with Ivan Mayrina citing information from a liquor company that disputed the claim made by a Quezon Integrated Provincial Health Officer in an earlier report.

The UH report explains that the level of alcohol proof in lambanog is not fixed and consistent, especially as “backyard producers” sell majority of the stocks.

The report also underscores that lambanog could contain methanol that may cause death.

Moreover, it was clarified that not all lambanog products available in the market have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

There were also no tests cited to prove that lambanog can be an effective substitute for isopropyl alcohol.
