Yes, you can get a massage even when on your period

Many women believe that they can't get a massage when on their period.

This is because they are supposedly prone to getting bruises during this delicate time.

But according to Dr. Raul Quillamor, Chief at the Office of Professional Education and Training Amang Rodriguez Medical Center, getting a massage can actually soothe a woman's discomfort during her period.

In an episode of Pinoy MD, Dr. Quillamor said massages can have a "therapeutic effect" for those suffering from dysmenorrhea.

"Actually 'yung massage, may therapeutic effect din 'yun sa mga babaeng may dysmennorhea. It can help, it can ease the stress of a woman," he said.

"Kasi nakikita naman natin na kapag stressed 'yung babae, trigger din 'yun for dysmenorrhea, so a massage can help soothe the body of a woman," he added.

Other myths debunked

Dr. Quillamor also disproved a couple of strange habits or beliefs that women have over menstruation.

Contrary to what some may think, softdrinks do not have any effect on the length of a menstrual cycle or period cramps.

"Wala namang studies on softdrinks kung ano ang epekto niya sa menstruation at saka sa menstrual cramps. So hindi totoo na pag uminom ka ng softdrinks ay mababawasan 'yung pain," he said.

He also said that it's fine to eat sour foods.

However, he said ladies should limit their salt intake.

"Hindi naman siya bawal. Nililimit lang, kasi during the time na nag-me-menstruation ang babae or even before the menstrual period, ay nagkakaroon kasi ng edema. Ang salt kasi, nag-a-attract ng tubig 'yun so kung may edema ang babae nagmamanas siya," he explained.

"Maasim, OK lang 'yun, wala namang studies 'yun. Kung ano yung gusto nila, OK lang 'yun but they have to be taken in moderation," he added.

How to ease discomfort

The doctor shared some tried and tested ways to ease pain or discomfort during your period.

Light exercise, such as stretching could do a lot. And instead of drinking caffeine, just go with water.

Also make sure to eat nutritious foods, and if needed, apply warm compress to sore areas.
