Here’s how wearing high heels can affect your children
A recent episode of Pinoy MD tackled a cute little thing that may have serious health repercussions: children wearing high heels.
To begin with, children who like wearing high heels may experience changes in their muscles, skin and bones. According to Dr. Nesti Panopio, an orthopedic surgeon in De Los Santos Medical Center, they can have bunions or hammer toes at a very early age.
And then there is the chronic leg pain syndrome. “Tumitigas ang muscles nila at sasakit ito once in a while,” Panopio said.
In the more serious spectrum, wearing of high heels can lead to scoliosis, a condition in which the spine curves sideways, and arthritis, or the swelling of joints.
“Too much wearing of high heels can cause anatomic changes that will have possible negative effects,” Panopio continued. “May contracture ng muscles, ng skin tapos hindi na babalik sa tamang position.”
Muscle contraction can affect everyday life, such as when kids might have a hard time wearing non-high heeled shoes because their feet have hardened.
Pinoy MD suggested for parents to stretch the feet and ankles of their kids, who are adamant about wearing high heels.
In adults, slathering of moisturizers on the legs and soaking your feet in warm water are recommended. — LA, GMA News
