Novel coronavirus: Can pets spread it? Will antibiotics help? And a few more questions answered
The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a serious thing and we all have to be careful. As of Monday afternoon, 24 people in the Philippines are under investigation for possible infection.
While news and health organizations have been diligent in explaining the virus, there is still a long list of questions about the virus.
RELATED: What is the 2019 novel coronavirus?
Thankfully, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a very helpful FAQ. Allow us to provide you a summary.
Can pets spread it?
No, they cannot. "There is currently no evidence that companion animals or pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus," the WHO said.
Still, it would be better for you to wash your hands after petting your furry friends.
Can I take antibiotics to prevent and treat the virus?
Sorry, antibiotics only work against bacteria, not viruses.
Well, are there medicines I can take to prevent it?
"There is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus," says the WHO.
Those infected, however, should receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms.
Is it true only older people are susceptible to it?
Nope. While older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions appear to be more vulnerable to it, the truth of the matter is anybody can be infected.
