Prevention is the only cure for polio
Low immunization rates in the Philippines have caused several diseases to regain hold in some areas in the Philippines. One of the most recent diseases that are at high risk for transmission is the poliovirus. Here are some fast figures to keep you updated:
1993 - the year the last known case of wild poliovirus was recorded in the Philippines
In 2000, the World Health Organization certified the Western Pacific Region, which includes the Philippines, polio-free. The last case of wild poliovirus recorded in the Philippines was in 1993.
< 5 - the age of the children most vulnerable to polio
Children under five years old are the most vulnerable to the disease, but it is important to note that polio can affect anyone at any age. The Department of Health is urging all parents and caregivers of children under 5 years of age to have them vaccinated against the poliovirus. The Department has scheduled several rounds of vaccination campaign. Go to your nearest health care provider for more information. Vaccination is the best way to stop the outbreak and prevent further transmission of the disease.
ZERO - the number of cures for polio
The most important thing to note is that polio has NO CURE. This is why it is doubly important to keep you and your family protected from this contagious disease. This can easily be done through vaccination. Because there is no cure, it is important to proceed to a doctor when the following symptoms are observed: fever, weakness in your extremities, stiffness of the neck and back, and difficulty in breathing.
NOVEMBER 25 to DECEMBER 7 – the dates of the next round of Department of Health’s Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio
Efforts to step up immunization and vaccination among children are still ongoing and it is important to find time to bring your children to the nearest health centers and hospitals to receive the vaccine.
