A teacher made coconut helmets for his students in case of earthquakes
Davao Del Sur was among the provinces hit by a powerful earthquake back in July, and some of the buildings it tore down were schools.
To prepare themselves for the next tremor, students at the Salud Cagas Technical and Vocational High School have fashioned their own helmets using nothing but coconut husks and a piece of garter.
This was after the school turned teacher Dennis Sabad's simple idea into a school project.
On John Consulta's report for Unang Balita, Dennis explained that their community did not have a lot of funds for additional disaster equipment.
The town, however, was rich in coconut trees.
"Isa sa mga pinakasensitive na part po sa ating ang ulo natin, at least man lang instead of magco-cover pa sila gamit ang kamay, so why not yung coconut helmet nalang ang gamitin nila?" Sabad said. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
