Here’s how a no-scalpel vasectomy is done
With a population of more than 100 million as of 2015, the Philippines is the 13th most populated country in the world.
Family planning has been one of the government’s solutions to the growing population, with campaigns targeted to women.
These days, the government has turned its attention to men — who are not particularly hot on the idea of undergoing a vasectomy, a minor procedure cutting the tubes (the vas deferens) where the sperm passes through.
But there is a new method to undergoing a male sterilization. The no-scalpel vasectomy is a less invasive procedure that lasts just 30 minutes.
Instead of an incision, a small puncture is made on the skin of the scrotal sac.
“Ibubuka nang konti [yung skin], and with a ring clamp kukunin yung vas deferens [to cut],” says Dr. Glenn Roy V. Parasol, Executive Director of Mary Johnston hospital.
“It’s not that invasive,” he adds.
The new method isn’t 100% reversible. “Mahihirapan na magka-anak — and it’s not because of erectile dysfunction,” clarifies Parasol. “Kasi pagkinabit yung pinutol, yung pinagputulan, magkakaruon ng peklat.”
