Devotees peg 'dancing sun' seen in Davao as 'miracle'

An amateur video showed how religious devotees in Marilog, Davao City marveled and even wept at the sight of sun rays which appeared to be blinking and moving inconceivably.

According to a report on Balita Pilipinas Ngayon by Real Soroche on Wednesday, the supposed miracle was witnessed last Sunday after the devotees attended mass at the Divine Mercy shrine in celebration of the feast of the Divine Mercy.

"Ang mga deboto, umiiyak sa labis ng tuwa nila, sir," said Dondon Alo, who witnessed the phenomenon.

When asked what they saw, Alo said: "Kumikislap-kislap sir, mahina tapos bibilis na talaga siya patungong east kasi dapat wala nang araw sa oras na 'yon."

Fr. Gracioso Charcos, who officiated the mass, claimed he also saw an image of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ in the light.

However, according an expert from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), what the witnesses saw was sunlight being refracted as it passed through water droplets or ice crystals forming the clouds.

"Scientifically, ang reason niyan ay dahil sa Cirrus clouds na nasa third layer," weather observer Ben Rosales said.

"Kumbaga nagsisilbing ice crystal na tinatawag nating prism at kapag nasisikatan ng araw, nagkakaroon siyang kulay at kumikislap siya kaya tingin ng mga tao parang sumasayaw ang sikat ng araw," she added. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
