DOH launches ‘Baywang Watch’ to help people manage holiday weight gain

Overeating and gaining weight seems inevitable during the holiday season with Christmas parties lined up coupled with a tempting Noche Buena spread with the family — but Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag on Friday reminded the public that while enjoying the feast is not bad, we should watch what we eat.

In an interview with "Dobol B sa News TV," Tayag introduced the Department of Health's "Baywang Watch," which encourages people to include nutritious dishes on the table and not to rely on medication to help sneak food that is bad for your heart, liver...and waistline.

He cited unspecified research that says that the pounds we gain during the holidays stay and become our new weight for the next year. "Kaya mapapansin niyo, sa pagdaan ng taon, lumalapad po tayo," he said.

"Portions ngayon ang labanan," he explained. "May pinggan ka, 'wag naman 'yong parang gumagawa ka ng condominium ng pagkain — merong kang Tower 1 at Tower 2, hindi ka pa nasiyahan, meron ka pang annex. Medyo delikado 'yon."

Tayag additionally advised people to have a light snack before attending a party, as it may sometimes start late and it might also aid in managing your portions.

"Pakikiramdaman natin ang katawan natin, dapat alam natin kung anong sinasabi ng katawan natin na gutom na tayo," he said. "So may ibang tao na kada apat na oras kakain — may snacks. May ibang tao naman, dalawang beses lang sa mag-hapon puwede na, kasi nga papakiramdaman mo ang katawan mo."

For people who are preparing food for the party, Tayag advised them not to make excessive servings. If there are leftovers, "ibigay po natin sa mga kapos-palad" Tayag said.

Tayag further warned against the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as the injuries that people might incur from using firecrackers. — Aya Tantiangco/RSJ, GMA News
