PGH doctor receives PRC’s Nubla award for excellence
An otolaryngologist at the Philippine General Hospital is this year's recipient of the Professional Regulation Commission's Nubla Excellence Award.
The award was given to Dr. Jose Florencio F. Lapeña, Jr. during the PRC Awards Night, held in Manila Hotel on June 23.
At the annual ceremony, the PRC recognizes the top professionals of 43 fields that have Professional Regulatory Boards.
Of the 43 individuals named the most outstanding professional in their fields this year, the top five were:
- Dr. Nathaniel P. Dugos, Chemical Engineering
- Dr. Gerardo C. Janairo, Chemistry
- DPWH Undersecretary Romeo S. Momo, Civil Engineering
- Dr. Monina T. Uriarte, Forestry
- Dr. Jose Florencio F. Lapeña, Jr., Medicine
The recipient of the Nubla Excellence Award was chosen from the top five.
In naming Lapeña the winner, the PRC noted his "distinguished contribution in the field of Medicine; his exemplary service in his profession as a dedicated academician, empowering medical educator and inspiring mentor, widely-published multidisciplinary scientist-researcher and prolific writer, internationally recognized multi-awarded editor and reviewer, and compassionate, committed, community-oriented physician and subspecialist surgeon [who] shows his commitment and professionalism in his field."
In other victories for the medical profession, the Board of Medicine was selected Outstanding Professional Regulatory Board and the Philippine Medical Association was named Outstanding Professional Organization.
Lapeña, who was recognized last year as the world's most prolific editor, is a professor of otorhinolaryngology at University of the Philippines Manila and an attending otolaryngologist, aerodigestive tract, and cleft and craniofacial plastic surgeon at the PGH. He is the first Nubla awardee from UP Manila. — BM, GMA News
