Kids learn basic first aid on World First Aid Day 2016

Anchoring on the global theme “First Aid for and by the Children,” the Philippine Red Cross conducted a free first aid lecture and demonstration to about 200 kids from different schools in Manila at the Manila Ocean Park grounds on Saturday, September 10, in celebration of World First Aid Day.

The activity aimed to engage and educate children, along with their parents, on emergency preparedness and basic aid. These include bandaging and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for kids 12 years and above.

Newly appointed PRC Secretary General Oscar Palabyab said that learning basic first aid will not only preparing children for the worst case scenario, but also help them develop their self-esteem and give them a sense of purpose early in their lives.

Aside from first aid and emergency responses training from the volunteers, the leading first aid provider in the country also introduced to the children the mobile application First Aid PH, which can downloaded for free for both Apple and Android users.

The app can be used even without an Internet connection and offers instant access to instructions on how to administer basic first aid. It also provides information on emergency preparedness and access to the Red Cross Hotline 143, which people can call for immediate assistance in times of emergency. — BM, GMA News
