Toyo Eatery's Jordy Navarra, more chefs from the Philippines win big at The Best Chef Awards
Four chefs from the Philippines won big at the eighth edition of The Best Chef Awards, which ran from November 4 to 6 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
These are chefs Jordy Navarra of Toyo Eatery; Chele Gonzalez of Gallery by Chele; Stephan Duhesme of Metiz; and Johanne Siy of Singapore-based Lolla.
Chef Jordy was among the 177 chefs who were recognized with Two Knives (World Class) by The Best Chef 2024.
Toyo Eatery, his restaurant with wife May Navarra, has been named on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list in 2019, 2023, and 2024.
Chefs Chele, Stephan, and Johanne, on the other hand, were among the 276 chefs who were each honored with One Knife (Excellent). Ninety-seven chefs were also recognized with Three Knives (The Best).
Chef Chele, originally from Spain, is known for critically acclaimed concepts like Gallery by Chele, Samira, Deli by Chele, and Cantabria by Chele, among others.
Half-Filipino, half-French chef Stephan, on the other hand, opened Metiz in 2019. Located in Makati, the establishment was named among Asia's 50 Best Restaurants in 2023 alongside Toyo Eatery.
Meanwhile, chef Johanne is the head chef of Lolla on Ann Siang Hill, Singapore. The chef, who grew up in Dagupan, Pangasinan, was named Asia's Best Female Chef 2023 by Asia's 50 Best Restaurants. She is the first Singapore-based chef to win the award and only the second Filipino, next to chef Margarita Forés.
This year's The Best Chef Awards recognized a total of 550 chefs from 61 countries.
Three outstanding chefs emerged as the very best at the event, with chef Rasmus Munk of Denmark's Alchemist named in First Place.
Chef Albert Adrià of Enigma in Spain and chef Eric Vildgaard of Jordnær in Denmark were hailed Second Place and Third Place, respectively.
The Best Chef Awards' voter base comprises 568 individuals from 63 countries, 348 of whom are chefs while 220 are professional voters from other sectors, such as food journalists and gastronomy experts.
Its tiered recognition system rates chefs' excellence from one to three knives.
One Knife (excellent) is awarded to chefs who get 20% or more of the maximum points, while Two Knives (World Class) are given to chefs who achieve 40% or more of maximum points. Three Knives (The Best), which show "top-tier culinary mastery," are awarded to chefs who obtain 80% or more of the maximum possibly points.
