Sinigang, inasal na manok among best Filipino food; balut named as worst by TasteAtlas

Sinigang and inasal na manok were named among the best Filipino food for September by TasteAtlas!

Sinigang (collectively) and inasal na manok both garnered a 4.5 out of 5 rating, ranking 1st and 2nd on TasteAtlas' Top 10 list, respectively.

“With its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country, sinigang is a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine,” TasteAtlas said of sinigang.

Sinigang (collectively) and sinigang na baboy were also named anew on TasteAtlas's 50 Best Soups in the World list this 2024.

On the other hand, TasteAtlas has described inasal na manok as a "unique Filipino grilled chicken dish."

Inasal na manok or chicken inasal uses different chicken parts marinated in a blend of vinegar and spices.

"During grilling, the meat is brushed with the annatto-infused oil which provides the chicken with an appetizing golden color and a unique peppery flavor," said TasteAtlas on its website.

The two dishes were followed by lechon, leche flan, bulalo, lumpiang shanghai, and tortang talong, which all garnered a score of 4.4. Sisig and adobo (collectively) rounded out the Top 10 best Filipino food this month, each earning a 4.2 rating.

Meanwhile, balut took the top spot for worst rated Filipino food for September with a rating of 2.7.

"Balut is a popular, although unusual Filipino delicacy, served everywhere from street stalls to upscale restaurants. It is a duck egg that has been hard-boiled, fertilized, and incubated. Traditionally, the cooked embryo is consumed straight from the shell," TasteAtlas described

The nine other worst rated Filipino food for September include inipit (2.9 rating), pinipig (3.0), biko (3.0), kinalas (3.1), pinikpikan (3.2), suman (3.3), spamsilog (3.3), kilawin (3.3), and pochero (3.3).

Balut also got the worst rating among egg dishes with a score of 2.7, according to TasteAtlas in 2022.

Taste Atlas is an international online publication that explores the world through local food. It regularly publishes lists of the best foods in various categories, with Philippine dishes and delicacies often ranking on its lists.
