Rainy season is here! 5 soup dishes for when you need comfort food

It’s officially “Raining in Manila!”

During this wet season, there’s nothing quite like indulging yourself with a hot bowl of soup to keep you warm and soothe the soul.

Whether you’re into noodle soups or you’re the type to crave porridge, locally known as lugaw or goto, here are five soup dishes widely available in Metro Manila and other parts of the country that you may enjoy as you please as we welcome the rainy season.

1. Sopas from Merienda by Pan de Manila

Sopas is a popular hearty Filipino dish that utilizes evaporated milk and chicken broth as its soup base. It’s usually cooked with elbow macaroni, chicken strips, cabbage, and carrots.

Merienda by Pan de Manila’s Homemade Sopas costs P280 for a solo serving and P720 for a family size. The restaurant has branches in Rockwell Ortigas, Rockwell Sheridan, Santolan Town Plaza, SM City Batangas, and Ayala Center Bloc Cebu.

2. Goto from Goto Tendon

Goto is a Filipino rice porridge dish made with glutinous rice and beef tripe that has a soft and creamy consistency. This hot dish is usually flavored with lots of ginger and fish sauce, and garnished with crispy garlic, chopped green onions, and calamansi on the side.

Goto Tendon’s original Goto dish costs P198 for small and P258 for large. It has several branches in Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, and Taguig.

3. Ramen from Mendokoro Ramenba

A staple in Japanese cuisine, Ramen has long been a go-to dish in the Philippines, with several ramen joints popping up in the country in the last decade or so.

One of the most celebrated ramen brands is Mendokoro Ramenba, which offers authentic and traditional ramen flavors like Shio (P470), Shoyu (P510), Tantanmen (P540), and Tonkotsu (P695).

Mendokoro Ramenba is located in Mitsukoshi Mall BGC, Molito Complex in Alabang, V Corporate Center in Makati, MOA Complex in Pasay, and IT Park in Cebu.

4. Batchoy from Chicken Bacolod

Batchoy, originating from La Paz, Iloilo, is a dish that is both comforting and invigorating. It’s a Filipino noodle soup made hearty with meat and innards, chicharron or pork cracklings, and garnished with chopped green onions and a raw egg that cooks as it is mixed into the hot broth.

Chicken Bacolod’s Batchoy is priced at P275. The restaurant has branches in Market! Market! in Taguig, Teacher’s Village in Quezon City, Ayala Mall Bay Area in Parañaque, and Glorietta 4 in Makati.

5. Champorado from Indulge

Champorado is the sweet version of lugaw and goto. It’s a sweet chocolate rice porridge traditionally made by infusing cocoa powder or tablea into boiling sticky rice.

To balance its sweetness, champorado is usually enjoyed with tuyo or salty dried fish.

In the Philippines, it’s usually served as breakfast, but of course, you can have it at any time of the day, especially during the rainy season.

Indulge’s Champorado offers a unique take on the traditional sweet porridge by using Adlai, a healthier alternative to sticky rice.

A pint of Dark Adlai Champorade from Indulge costs P480. You may order through Indulge's website.
