Gulay Pa More! fiesta to highlight local, indigenous crops on May 25

Have you ever heard of parirutong? What about kalingag, kulitis, and sampinit?

These ingredients, perhaps unfamiliar to some, are just a few that will be featured at Gulay Pa More!, the Philippines' first ever fiesta celebrating local and indigenous crops. The event is happening on May 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the CSSP (AS) Parking Lot within the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman.

Gulay Pa More! turns the spotlight on the country's abundant native and endemic flora, how these can be used in plant-based dishes, and the traditional cooking techniques behind them. It will also showcase food innovations from various chefs using heritage, indigenous, and local ingredients.

Attendees, too, can look forward to an organic produce market from small holder farmers, local vegan product stalls by micro and small businesses, learning sessions on food and agriculture, two free native tree walks around UP campus, as well as tributes to the late Lumad woman leader Bai Bibyaon Ligkayan Bigkay and the late Filipino botanist and plant taxonomist Leonardo Co.

Aside from highlighting heritage food and indigenous crops, the event also aims to spread awareness about extreme weather events brought on by the climate crisis like drought, typhoons, and heatwaves, and why indigenous foods should take precedence in this "new normal."

Gulay Pa More! held its press launch on May 12, where it shared a preview of the spread, ingredients, products, and sessions that one can expect at the fiesta.

"These crops are key to our food security and climate resilience, and Gulay Pa More! is our way of inviting people to celebrate and protect them by making sure they remain in our diets," said chef Lao Castillo, one of the event's organizers and co-founder of food heritage non-profit organization Gulay Na.

Gulay Pa More! is organized by Gulay Na!, social enterprise Good Food Community, agroecology advocate network Agroecology X, food heritage digital archive Lokalpedia, Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pagunlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG), and the Poverty Reduction through Social Entrepreneurship (PRESENT) Coalition.
