What are Jiaozi dumplings and why are they considered lucky for Chinese New Year?
We’ve all heard of Siumai, Hakaw, and Xiao Long Bao, but there is another dumpling that is considered a symbol of luck in any celebration, especially Chinese New Year: Jiaozi.
In Thursday’s episode of “Unang Hirit,” UH Funliner Kaloy Tingcungco tried the trending dumplings on wheels by Luxinan Dumplings, helmed by chef Hongbiao Chen.
Jiaozi is one of the specialties of Luxinan Dumplings. It’s a traditional Chinese food usually served on special occasions as it is believed to attract money luck due to its shape, similar to ancient gold and silver.
According to the Chinese chef, the demand for Jiaozi has increased since several videos of his product trended on social media, thanks to vloggers and content creators.
When asked how many dumplings he makes daily, Chef Chen said it’s 500 to 800.
“People want to have Jiaozi for the Chinese New Year, and many Chinese people here as well,” he said. “The demand will increase more.”
Luxinan Dumplings’s Jiaozi retails for P20 per piece. It’s located in South Signal Village in Taguig City. —Hermes Tunac/JCB, GMA Integrated News
