La Union food trip: Dinakdakan Pizza, Honey Bagoong Chicken and more


Along with Siargao and Baler, La Union has become one of the coolest surf destinations in the Philippines.

And in La Union, the town of San Juan can certainly hold it up on its own. Some 277km away from Metro Manila, San Juan boasts of beautiful waves and equally beautiful food.

In a recent "Biyahe ni Drew" episode, we learn of some of the best places serving the yummiest things. You'll definitely want to fuel up before hitting the waves, after hitting the waves, or you know what? Just fuel up all together and watch others hit the waves. 

1. Villa Teresa Esperanza's Dinakdakan Pizza. The brainchild of couple Joan and Celso del Rosario, dinakdakan pizza boasts of a thin crust and three types of cheeses that serve as bed to liempo, liver, and several other ingredients that dinakdakan, dinakdakan. You can get this at Villa Teresa Esperanza.  

2. Sabong's Honey Bagoong Chicken. Chicken joint Sabong is among the many popular restaurants in San Juan for good reason: The serve some of the most innovative and super satisfying renditions of the good ol' fried chicken.

There's their Elyu Original, the spicy Szechuan Style, the popular Korean Soy, but perhaps the most noteable of the lot: The Honey Bagoong, which is something of a deconstructed Kare-Kare. The chicken comes with honey bagoong glazed and is served with a kare-kare dipping sauce and smoked eggplant salsa.

3. Putok-batok dishes at Bucket Ba? Bring your appetite at Bucket Ba?, a joint serving incredible sizzling plates, ihaw-ihaw, and unli rice. Witness the names of some of their menu items: Casket, Flatline, May you Rest in Pares.

4. Cruffins at Masa Bakehouse. What was once a warehouse is now Masa Bakehouse, a cafe popular and well-loved for its cruffins, a cross between croissants and muffins.

The pastries boast of that distinct croissant flakiness while holding interesting and unusual flavors like Coconut Berry with ruby chocolate, Chocolate Dulce de Leche, Strawberry Cheesecake, and more. — LA, GMA Integrated News
