Why does chopping onions make us cry? Kuya Kim explains
The onion is one of the key ingredients of many Filipino dishes. It can be challenging to prepare, however, as chopping it causes tears to leak from our eyes. Ever wondered why this happens?
According to Kuya Kim on Friday's "24 Oras," chopping onions makes us cry because it releases a gas called syn-Propanethial S-oxide.
When this mixes with certain enzymes in the onion, this creates sulfur gas that can enter our eyes. When it does, it creates an acid that irritates our eyes.
The onion is a high-priced commodity these days. At the San Andres Market in Manila, red onions are sold at P300 per kilo while white onions are sold at P200 per kilo.
With onion becoming expensive, one bride chose to have a bouquet made of onions instead of the usual flowers during her wedding.
