Pinoy sorbetes lands in Belgium thanks to Filipina and her husband
Pinoys, your favorite ice cream has reached the streets of Belgium!
This is thanks to a Filipina named Kamille Rodriguez, who kickstarted a business called "Sorbetes ni Manong Jelle" with her husband Jelle.
According to a report on "Dapat Alam Mo," Kamille moved to Belgium in 2013 to work as a nurse.
She first spoke to Jelle through a dating website, and when she saw that he was open to embrace her culture, she went to meet him in person. In 2016, they married and eventually welcomed two children together.
Jelle's job as pastry chef is the reason why the couple found themselves starting a food business. Kamille had the idea to bring the Philippines' "dirty ice cream" to her new home.
"Naisip po namin na magbenta through the bike, para makakapunta kami kung nasan ang tao. Since we offered Filipino-inspired ice cream, nagpagawa ako ng design ng parang kariton ng ice cream ng Pilipinas pero modern version," Kamille said.
Their flavors include mango, buko pandan, and halo-halo. Their Rocky Road lavor also boasts of Davao chocolate, and they even put a spin on the ube cheese trend.
But the more popular flavors are apparently maja blanca and sapin-sapin!
"We're very happy. Actually, 'di namin ineexpect na mag-boom, na mare-recgonize kami, so very happy kami na through our ice cream, na-promote namin ang Filipino culture," Kamille said. —JCB, GMA News
