150,000 meals served: A Kindness Mission for Typhoon Odette affected families
Showing kindness can drive meaningful impact. Whether it is saying words of affirmation or giving back to those in need, a simple act of kindness can go a long way. But when people work together to spread kindness, it can uplift an entire community.
Typhoon Odette left a devastating mark on several regions of Visayas and Mindanao. Electricity and water supply were cut off, houses and businesses were brought down to the ground, leaving many families displaced. McDonald’s through its charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and in partnership with private and public organizations, banded together and mobilized relief operations for those affected by the typhoon.
A mission to help uplift lives
RMHC Philippines has been committed to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate Filipinos since 1995. One of its programs, Kindness Kitchen, is focused on serving meals to frontliners and marginalized communities.
For Typhoon Odette operations, the goal of Kindness Kitchen was to serve 150,000 meals. to communities in Bohol, Cebu, Dinagat Islands, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Palawan, Southern Leyte, Surigao, and Negros Oriental. More than 20 branches from NCR and nearby areas in Visayas and Mindanao were activated to prepare the meals.
Preparing the meals were done by McDonald’s employee volunteers. Likewise, McDonald’s franchisees also sprung into action and donated more meals and beverages. In total, RMHC’s Kindness Kitchen raised a total of 7.9 Million Pesos in donations.
Collective support
The number of hands helping are not only limited to McDonald’s employees. The project was also backed by partners of RMHC namely, the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), the Naval Reserve Command Multi-Sectoral Linkaging Committee, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Air Asia, Philippine Airlines, Coca-Cola, and many more.
"We are grounded on our commitment to be a community partner, extending a helping hand to those in need, especially during the most challenging of times. We are one with the different sectors of society in helping our fellow Filipinos and we are grateful for their trust and support” said Kenneth S. Yang, McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO and RMHC President.
