Is there a correct way to assemble a cheeseburger?

Heart Evangelista posted a cute video of her and husband Chiz Escudero debating about how to assemble a cheeseburger.

She captioned it, "'Chiz Burger' bato bato pick na lang kaya," already showing her confusion and is that frustration?

In the video, Heart makes the case that the best way to make a cheeseburger is to first put cheese on both buns and toast them. While that's going on, they will cook  the burger patty and when that's done, they'll assemble all the ingredients together et viola. A perfect cheeseburger.

But Chiz argues it's better to put the cheese on one bun, cook the burger, top it on the bun with cheese, and then top that with another slice of cheese. The hot burger patty will ensure melting both slices of cheese, he said.

From there, they can top it with bacon before putting in the tomato and lettuce.

The complexity of Chiz's preferred procedure seemed to confuse Heart, who could only say, "Kung ano na lang tamang gusto mong gawin."

So we asked chefs and a home cook if there is a best way to make a cheeseburger.

When shown Heart's video, Rhamon Abrantes, executive chef of 8Cuts, listed as among the makers of Metro Manila's best cheeseburgers, said he'd choose Heart's simple method.

Still, he recommends the 8Cuts' way: buns, and then veggies, and then patty, and then cheese.

"We melt the cheese with the patty. Place it (cheese) on top when the patty is almost cooked," Chef Ramon suggested.

Hookys BBQ Joint's chef Anton Abad meanwhile thinks Sorsogon Gov. Chiz's way is the right way to make a cheeseburger.

"Sear or grill the beef, then put the cheese [on top para] doon siya magme-melt. You can cover it para mag-melt siya or as is na yung heat nung burger patty," Chef Anton said.

"Better grilled burger. Kung wala sa pan, isi-sear mo lang, tapos i-tu-turn turn mo lang then just put the cheese on top," he added.

He recommends brushing the bread with butter or egg wash and then heating it on the pan, instead of putting them in a toaster. And from there, you can proceed on building your burger: Put on the lettuce, then the burger patty with the melted cheese on top, followed by other things like onion, pickles, and bacon.

But Bea Ledesma, who runs A Home Kewk and makes seriously delicious veggie burgers, says neither Heart nor Chiz is right or wrong. "People have their own equally valid preferences. To each their own!" She said.

She does however like to use a griddle. "I like to cook the patty on the griddle, topped with cheese so it melts on top. And then you can slide it directly on to a warm bun."

"Maybe my only recommendation is to try your own cheese technique on a veggie burger patty. And to eat a veggie burger this 2022!"
