Kumain lang ng kalapati, patay-gutom na? Here's where to get tasty kalapati dishes

The internet has been going crazy over a viral video of four little girls bickering like grown-ups behind somebody's house in Pandi, Bulacan.

One of the highlights of the clip was when one of the girls accused her friend of being so "patay-gutom" that she ate kalapati at home.

Laugh all you want, but some people in the Philippines actually eat kalapati as a dish. Some of them say it even tastes better than chicken!

According to a report on "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho," you can get a full order of "Lechon Kalapati" in Binangonan, Rizal for only P200.

A breeder named Santi Geromo, Jr. explained how some kalapati could not be bred, so his family decided to cook them as food.

Kalapati has also become a popular dish in Victoria, Tarlac due to the famous "Arroz Caldo with Kalapati" served at a local family eatery.

Meanwhile, "Fried Kalapati" has been a long-time best-seller at a Chinese restaurant in Mandaue City, Cebu.

According to City Wok owner Rafael Cean Co, the dish has been super popular at celebrations like birthdays and weddings as kalapati are said to "bring luck."

Yes, some customers felt sorry for the bird, but many of them have also been surprised by how tasty it is.

"I wanna introduce it to the Filipino at mga Cebuano," Co said.

But is it okay for us to consume kalapati on a regular basis? According to a health expert, the animal can actually be a great (and cheap) source of protein.

"[It's considered as lean meat], ibig sabihin no'n, mas mataas ang nabibigay nilang protein at mababa yung nabibigay nilang fat content," nutritionist-dietician Dr. Faith Nacional explained.

The story behind the viral video

What ever happened to the girls who were bickering in the viral kalapati video?

According to KMJS, the little girls in the video are four friends named Joela, Yanyan, Naji and Ivy.

Apparently, the main cause of the huge argument was only a small bag of chips.

"Binigyan ko na po siya pero bigla pong inagaw niya," Joela explained.

"Sabi kasi ni [Joela], siya na lang po kakain," Yanyan added.

There were many hilarious clap-back moments between the kids, but netizens were floored by Joela's kalapati accusation that came out of nowhere.

"Eh ikaw nga, inuulam ang kalapati!" Joela told Yanyan.

"Kala mo hindi masakit 'yung pinagsasabi mo sa akin? Na patay gutom ako?" her friend replied. "Bakit? hindi ba yun masakit?"

Fortunately, the four little friends eventually made up, and it was clarified that Yanyan did not eat kalapati at home.

"Hindi po [kinakain]," the little girl told KMJS. "Hinuhuli ko po ang kalapati ginagawa ko pong pet." —JCB, GMA News
