Need a healthy substitute to sisig? Try one made with saba banana peels


Who said you can’t enjoy your favorite food while aiming for a healthier lifestyle?

In an episode of “Pinas Sarap,” chef Chona Laureta introduced a guilt-free substitute to sisig, which is made with saba banana peels.

According to nutritionist Anna Teresao Orillo, although these are usually just discarded, saba banana peels are rich in nutrients.

“Mayaman ’yan sa functional properties o phytochemicals. Kasama na rin dito yung fiber at pectin. Ito ay bumabalot sa lining ng tiyan, nakakatulong siya sa gut health,” she said.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, phytochemicals may inhibit cancer growth and boost immunity. Pectin, meanwhile, offers appetite-reducing effects, according to Healthline.

Ingredients and procedure

To make saba sisig, what you need are just ingredients that can easily be found at home.

Ripe banana peels
Cornstarch
All Purpose Flour
Garlic Powder
Paprika
Onion Powder
White Pepper
Seasoning
Sweet Soy Sauce
Onions
Mayonnaise
Chili (Optional)

Remove the ends of the bananas and separate the skin from the fruit itself.

Let the peels boil for three minutes then let it cool.

Prepare a mixture with cornstarch, flour, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and white pepper.

Slice the peels into dices then cover them up with the mixture.

Deep fry until they are crispy.

In a separate pan, heat the seasoning, sweet soy sauce and onions.

Once done, put the cooked banana peels in with the sauce and mix with mayonnaise and chili.
