How to make glühwein, Germany's favorite Christmas drink
Looking for something new to serve on Christmas this holiday season?
The German Embassy Manila has kindly shared a recipe for glühwein or mulled wine, a drink which helps people keep warm while visiting the famous Christmas markets.
We may not have a winter here in the Philippines, but colder days have arrived thanks to Amihan or the northeast monsoon. Perfect time to try a warm drink!
Here are the ingredients:
- 1 bottle of dry red wine
- 2 sliced oranges
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 cloves or nutmeg

For the wine, internet recipes recommend a cabernet sauvignon. Orange juice can also be used instead of sliced oranges.
Some recipes also suggest powdered or ground varieties of the spices as alternatives—just a little dash or pinch would do.
Once you have everything, follow these instructions from the German Embassy:
"Heat (but do not boil) the wine, add sugar, oranges and spices. Turn off heat and let steep for one hour. Reheat and serve!"
Enjoy!
