Food trends that emerged during quarantine

Several food trends emerged amid quarantine, with a number of Pinoys finding ways to be productive and earn a few extra bucks on the side.

In a report on Unang Hirit, small business owners shared some of the treats they sell explaining why it has become popular among Filipinos.

1. Sushi bake

Kim Miguel, who is the owner of Sushi Bake PH said they got the idea of making the famous sushi bake from the internet. She is just one of the many enterprising Filipinos who deconstructed the sushi, laid out the ingredients in a pan, baked them, and sold them.

You'll only wrap a spoonful in a Nori once you're ready to have a bite.

2. Ube cheese pandesal

Another food trend which was widely seen during quarantine — all the way to Chicago and California, even — and is the ube cheese pandesal.

To make their product stand out, Team Bang Pastries gave it a little twist: Ube cheese spanish bread, anyone?

"Ang kakaiba sa spanish bread namin is just that ube and cheese flavor," owner of The Team Bang Pastries Arch. Mark Timbang said.

"Finding the perfect mix and the balance of flavors na alam namin na papasok sa lasa ng marami," he added.

3. Basque Burnt Cheesecake

Though not as popular as the ube cheese pandesal or sushi bake, the Basque Burnt Cheesecake has been popular on IG and Viber marketplace groups.

Originating from the Basque region of Spain, this cheesecake is based at a higher temperature, making for cracked sides and a burnt top.

Chef Janellsa Giel Bagadiong-Ludwig of Jeepney Cafe in Europe gets more specific. Basked at 200 to 240 degrees, "on that high temperature, yung lasa niya nagiiba."

4. Bottled milk tea

Instead of going out to get your cup of milk tea, a few business-minded Pinoys decided to make their own.

Thomas Pangilinan and Lucky Calamutcha started "Nakabotea," a business that sells milk tea in glass bottles.

"Naisip namin dapat eco-friendly yung lalagyan namin so nilalagay namin siya sa glass bottle para madali i-recycle," they said. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
