#PINNED: What cake should you buy for mom this Mother's Day

#Pinned makes it easier for young Filipinos to  discover meaningful and enriching content and stories that will help them separate music from the noise, wheat from the chaff, and flowers from the weeds.

All our stories are written by young creatives who made it their life mission to know everything there is to know about how fellow young adults can make the most out of their limited down time every day, every week.

If you're a Millennial or Gen Z Filipino, chances are you have no idea Mother's Day is on Sunday. And right now while you're reading this, you might be in a state of cold, guilty dread. Usually, this is solved with a quick visit to the nearest mall that results to a couple of immaculately wrapped boxes courtesy of the amazing peepz at that corner in department stores. One of this is most certainly a cake that has a “Best Mother Ever” message or something along the lines of “I Love You, Mama.” Because yay capitalism, right?

This time though, circumstances are so much different we don't know whether to laugh or cry. Or both. The community quarantine has closed down our beloved avenues of consumerism that we cannot buy any last minute stuff right now to assuage guilt. You can do things on your own, yes, like kids making macaroni picture frame or, god forbid, bake your own cake. But of course, we're not going to recommend that. Nanay deserves better than that, obvs.

What we'd do, if we were in your shoes, is do the most predictable thing there is. Buy a cake for Mother's Day. However, due to the current quarantine restrictions in place, it might be hard to buy a cake this time around. Fret not, though, mama’s boys and girls. There are still open bakeshops scattered all over the Metro. You can find them listed below.

But before we go to the actual open bakeshops that you can make a mad dash run to, let's settle down a bit. Do you actually have a cake in mind? LOL, silly Millennial (or Gen Z). You cannot just buy a dedication chocolate cake, slap some mindless greeting, and call it a day. Why don't you put some thought into it? Here, let us help you.

1. Chocolate

The most predictable one, yes. But predictable for a reason. This is also, based on our subjective tastebuds, the best cake there is. Now, if only you can find a chocolate mint cake, that would be divine.

2. Red Velvet

Slightly acidic but still adorably sweet, this is perhaps the most apt description for most Filipino moms. The tongue lashing might be relentless and so OA at times but deep in your heart you know that mom only wants the very best for you.

3. Ube

If someone's (who is not Filipino) to ask us how to describe ube, we'd probably draw a blank. The taste is so uniquely Filipino that there is nothing like it in the world. And wouldn't that be the best description there is for our moms?

4. Mango

Ah, the sweetest of the bunch. There's a reason why cakes are a given during Mother's Day. What dessert is more fitting for the sweetest people on Earth?

5. Cheesecake

Every bite of this light and creamy cake feels like a warm hug. Like a warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest that spurs you to continue or get up after a nasty fall. Like warm words of comfort from mom after every rejection, heartbreak, or just about any encounter with a terribly frustrating world.

If that helps you, then let's get on the actual meat of this article. Here are the open bakeshops that can help you save Mother's Day.

(Keep in mind that most of these bakeshops are operating on shorter hours with skeleton workforce, and due to fewer resources, their menus and services are limited.)
