The Philippine cuisine is greatly influenced by the Chinese culture. In fact, through different variations of noodles like the Pancit Habhab of Lucban, Quezon and the Pancit Lomi of Lipa, Batangas, it is truly evident that Chinese staples have become Filipino favorites even before the Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards.
Just as there is a right way of consuming Chinese food, there is also a right way of welcoming the Year of the Metal Rat. First and foremost, it is imperative to have at least twelve round fruits on the table as they signify prosperity through the entire year. Aside from fruits, serving any other round-shaped delicacies such as Nian Gao, commonly known as Tikoy, and dim sum, which means “touch the heart,” are also believed to make the coming year even more bountiful.
Second, it is recommended to serve what rats are fond of eating – cheese and nuts; not to bring rats to the table, literally, but to make one as clever as a rat. Last but not the least, serving chicken dishes is discouraged because of the Filipino saying, “isang kahig, isang tuka,” or “one scratch, one peck” in English, for it means being comfortable with just enough to get by.
