Filipino food joint Sari Sari Store gets a glowing review on the Los Angeles Times

“I have stopped by Sari Sari Store five times in the last three days, and I’m not sure if I should be admitting this to you or to a therapist,” begins Jonathan Gold, a restaurant critic of the LA Times on his article published October 6.

Gold is talking about the newly opened Filipino food joint at L.A.’s Grand Central Market. It is run by James Beard nominated chef Margarita Manzke and her husband Walter Manzke – the same couple behind Manila’s well-loved Wildflour.

On his review, he mentions the arroz caldo, buko pie, and sisig twice, talks about the tortang talong, halo-halo, and lechon manok, and because Sari Sari Store‘s menu “is based around savory rice bowls”, Gold informs his readers of our beloved silog, “a toss or meat, vegetables and aronmatics – served over pick-spiked garlic-fried rice. There is always a fried egg on top,” he continues.

The humble silog is a magical breakfast experience among Filipinos, so seeing somebody else try and define something so familiar and so well loved is interesting to say the least: “the inevitable egg is poached sous-vide to the soft, runny consistency of the eggs you find in ramen. A squirt of lime and a dash of fish sauce transform the flavor – the necessarily better, but different, with an extra level of depth. You’re ready for the morning,” Gold writes. He totally gets it.
