ABV, The Curator land spot on Asia's Best Bars 2016
The bar scene in Asia has become too big to go unnoticed and the efforts of the men behind it has been rewarded by Asia's 50 Best Bar list.
This is the first regional spin-off of the World's Best Bar, a seven-year-old award organized and compiled by Drinks International magazine. A total of 400 leading figures in the bar industry vote for the winners.
On its first run, two bars in the Philippines made the cut: ABV or Alcohol by Volume in Jupiter, Makati at 14th place; and The Curator in Legazpi corner Palanca, Makati at 16th.
An article on World's 50 Best Bars website describes ABV as "a Prohibition-style speakeasy with a copper bar top in a brick and wood space."
It adds, "Drinks hover around classics and signature twists created by the staff, and ABV also has the largest absinthe collection in town – more than 30 bottles, from classic French-style absinthe pours to an absinthe fountain."
Meanwhile, another article praised The Curator for its attention to detail, writing, "With reverence to the origins of each ingredient – from coffee beans to homemade bitters to small-batch spirits – all the drinks are carefully created with proper technique, churning out some of the most profound flavour profiles in the country to date."
According to the list, the best bar can be found in Singapore: 28 Hong Kong Street. Curiously, Singapore and Hong Kong are tied as the best-represented countries on the list with nine entries each. —AT/KBK, GMA News
