Even with the prospect of dealing with heavy Makati CBD rush-hour traffic, an invitation to a Thanksgiving dinner given by the US Potato Board (USPB) was too good of an offer to pass up. It had me hopping on Manila’s public transport system for a potato-centric, five-course meal at Terraz in Zuellig Building in Makati.

Every dish, from the appetizer to the dessert, incorporated US potatoes in one form or another. Terraz executive chef Arnold Gozon, this year’s featured chef, whipped up dishes like Manhattan Seafood Chowder with Potato Croquette and Oven-Roasted Rosemary Pork Belly with US Granules and Potato Flakes Gnocchi.

The appetizer, Potato Cake with Crabmeat Avocado and Sesame Ahi Tuna Salad, was easily my favorite. The dessert—Blueberry-Filled Pound Cake with Crunchy Maple Basket Weave Potato—however, was too dense, lacked flavor and looked out of place in the potato-themed get-together.

Before the Thanksgiving dinner officially started, USPB, represented by country representative Reji Retugal-Onal and global marketing manager Susan Weller, presented their #USPotatoesForACause campaign, an ongoing social media campaign encouraging people to share their favorite spud recipes for a chance to win P10,000 in gift certificates.

USPB will also donate a kilo of US potatoes to their partner orphanages, Tahanan ng Pagmamahal and Bahay Maria, for every submitted recipe. The donation aims to help these organizations create healthy but affordable dishes for orphaned and abandoned children in their care.

To join, take a photo of a dish you made with US potatoes, upload the photo on your Facebook page together with the recipe, and include the #USPotatoesForACause hashtag. Contest ends on December 31, 2015. — BM, GMA News
