Ready for carrot and kalabasa ice cream this summer?

Here's a sweet way for parents to convince their children to eat vegetables like carrots and squash, especially with summer approaching: vegetable-flavored ice cream.

The unusual cold treat is gaining popularity in Manaoag, Pangasinan, according to a report by GMA Dagupan's Hazel Cawaing on "Primera Balita."

"Sa mga bata, di nila gaano kinakain yan [gulay], pero pag hinalo sa ice cream siguro naman malalasahan nilang masarap," said vegetable ice cream maker Delma Sampaga.

Sampaga chops up the vegetables, boils them, blends them fine, and then adds the puree to a milk, cornstarch and sugar mix. The resulting mixture is then chilled.

Her customers seem satisfied with the veggie dessert. "Matamis naman po siya at nangingibabaw ang sarap niya," said one. "Malalasahan mo ang gulay," said another.

According to the report, Sampaga's products have reached all the way to Bulacan and Baguio City. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
