Chicharap: The chicharon levels up
Chicharon is a popular snack among Filipinos but some have found a few tweaks to update this traditional treat.
Greens Restaurant and Cafe has been attracting customers because it serves chicharon without the harmful effects. Their vegan chicharon is made of wheat flour - which is not limited solely to the creation of bread - and fried in vegetable oil.
"Alam mo naman ang Pinoy mahilig sa chicharon," said Mary Ann Duran, owner of Greens Restaurant and Cafe in an "Unang Balita" report.
"So yung mga medyo nag-iingat na and those who want healthy pero hinahanap pa rin nila yung taste ng chicharon, they come here," she said.

Meanwhile, 2nd's Restaurant and Cafe caters to the pork lovers. Their chicharon specialty is the Bacon Chicharon. The restaurant uses lean bacon in their recipe because it has the least amount of fat.
Chicharon has also been turned into a chocolate-dipped dessert at Gino's Brick Oven Pizza.
"Basically pinipili namin yung pinaka-masarap na chicharon na gusto namin," said Jutes Templo, the owner. "Bagay sa tsokolate yung may taba tapos nun, pipili ka ng pinaka-gusto mong tsokolate."
A customer commented on this seemingly strange combination. "Okay yung lasa niya, nag-blend yung tamis and alat ng chicharon." — Jessica Bartolome/JDS, GMA News
