From veggie juice to salad in a jar: Entrepreneurs offer healthy food to go

We're busy people; that's why we only have time to grab a cheeseburger, fries and soda at our favorite fast food joint at mealtime.

At least, that's our excuse—an excuse that may get flimsier in time as more entrepreneurs start offering nutritional meals for people on the go, according to a report by Valerie Tan on "News To Go" Monday.

Detoxify Bar at Eastwood, Libis in Quezon City offers high-fiber, high-protein, low-calorie meals, and also sells juices made from organic fruit and vegetables at P220 a bottle. And if you're in Metro Manila, they deliver.

The juices are good for cleansing, "if you want to flush out toxins from your body," said Detoxify Bar owner Joy Kristine Torres. "Other people just take cleansing for weight loss, but it's not actually a weight loss plan or program. It does jump-start your weight loss, but it's not the main purpose of going on detox."

Among the juice varieties to choose from are the Green Vegan Detox, a cleansing blend of green leafy vegetables, and Red Vegan Detox, which will give drinkers an energy boost from its ingredients: apple, carrot, lemon, beet and cucumber.

Of course, you can make your own cleanses at home; you just need a juicer and a supply of fruit and vegetables. Whole Food Store owner Weizel Gulfan recommends a ratio of 80 percent vegetables to 20 percent fruit per drink, and also suggests including the peel of certain fruit, such as apple, as a lot of the nutrients are in the peel.

Gulfan's business also offers salad for pickup or delivery in Makati. Instead of the usual plastic containers, the salad is packed in glass jars which, she said, "we're sure people will reuse so we cut down on waste."

With more healthful options like these now out there, it might be time to put down the cheeseburger and give that jar of salad a go.— BM, GMA News
